With so many different nail services to choose from, deciding which type of manicure to get can feel overwhelming. What’s the difference between Shellac and Vinylux? For that matter, what’s the difference between Shellac and gels? No need to worry: Bombshell’s got you covered. Read on to learn the difference between these three types of manicures, then book an appointment with us once you’ve picked your favorite.
Essentially, Shellac is “permanent” nail polish that is cured with a UV light. Like gel nails, Shellac nails can last for up to two weeks without chipping, breaking, or requiring extra coats. They can actually last much longer than two weeks, but the fact that your natural nails will continue to grow out beneath them will make you want to return to the salon for an update.
The biggest difference between Shellac nails and gel nails is the removal process. Both are removed by soaking the fingers in acetone, but Shellac nails take about 1/3rd of the time to disintegrate. Shellac nails also differ from gel nails in that they cannot be used to lengthen your original nails.
Gel nails are formed from a combination of monomer liquid and polymer powder. When the liquid reacts with the powder, it creates a hard resin that can be formed into a square, round, or oval nail shape. This makes gel nails a great option for those looking to extend their nails from their natural length.
Like Shellac, most gels nail are cured by placing the nails under a UV light for two minutes. No-light gels, on the other hand, can be cured by applying a special nail activator over the top coat. Like nail polish, gels come in a wide range of colors, but unlike nail polish, they last for up to 2 weeks.
Shellac and gel are great options for people who lead busy lives and don’t have time to bother with their nails. However, for some people, the long-lasting quality of Shellac and gel nails is actually a downside. If you like your nail polish to change as often as your mood, Vinylux is the best option for you, because it only lasts for about a week. It is applied just like nail polish, with no base coat necessary. Once Vinylux adheres to the nail, it forms a vinyl-like texture that won’t chip like regular nail polish. The top coat placed over it is designed to become more durable as it is exposed to natural sunlight, making it even less likely to chip.
With an 8-10 minute dry time, Vinylux doesn’t set instantaneously like gel and Shellac nails, but still dries fairly quickly. It costs about as much as regular nail polish, and can be removed with standard nail polish remover.
With all these great options to choose from, it’s understandable if you’re still undecided! When choosing a type of manicure, consider the type of lifestyle you lead and the condition your nails are already in. If you’re a nervous nail biter, you’ll probably want to go with gel nails, so you can enjoy a beautiful elongated nail shape. If you loathe soaking your fingers in acetone, however, gels probably aren’t the best choice for you; you’re better off going with Shellac, which looks just as nice but has a much quicker removal time. And if your Saturday salon visit is the highlight of your week, Vinylux is the way to go.
